Our story begins in 1958. Bill Watson, a surveyor turned motel owner, was looking to expand. After laying out several mobile home parks as a surveyor he decided to build one of his own on some land he owned. A good friend and neighbor, Howard Bland, knew of a former miniature golf course that was for sale in a better location. So sure, in fact, that he loaned Bill the extra money he needed to purchase this property. When a permit for 12 mobile home sites was granted Bill got to work laying out the lots, running water lines, making a road and pouring concrete pads for the mobile homes. Now a name was needed. His first choices of Vagabond or Gypsy were already taken. Then it came to him - Romany! You can find it in Webster's Dictionary meaning gypsy. Bill's sons Jerry and John always had summer jobs helping Dad keep the park in shape. For over 30 years, Wally Sanders, was the park manager - fielding questions and dealing with the tenants while Bill maintained both the motel (until it was sold in 1978) and the park. In 1990 Bill semi-retired. What had started out as 12 lots had grown over ten fold. Howard Bland's loan was repaid and their friendship lasted a lifetime. Romany Park has been cared for by Bill's two sons Jerry and John, and his son-in-law Giorgio for many years. Some of our residents have been with us from the park's infancy and watched it grow over 40 years. Within that time residents have bonded and formed lasting friendships with the Romany Park family and now we extend that opportunity to you.
